September Pain

I know, I know, still no new photo albums – but hey, I’ve got a fantastic excuse. I went to Berlin Festival over the weekend where I got to see a bunch of acts that I’d wanted to see for a while, such as:

  • Little Dragon – ok – they started a bit early so missed that more or less 🙁
  • Grimes – a little bit too bass heavy for my taste, was she singing or was I just a drug induced as her ‘dancers’
  • Ghostpoet – awesome, nothing else to say about that
  • Sigur Rós – again, awesome, glad I finally got to see these guys!
  • Major Lazer – possibly taking the hands in the air and shirts off a little too far….
  • WhoMadeWho – I have since bought nearly all their albums, so that sums that up 🙂
  • SBTRKT – awesome, was looking forward to this and he didn’t dissapoint. Funny though that Little Dragon didn’t sing on one of his main tracks since she was around.

And after this my back, once again, crapped out. I was left in a highly immobile state where I had to work from home for some time due to the simple fact that I couldn’t move. I mean, generally speaking it’s September rain that hits us around this time of year, but in my particular scenario that has been replaced with pain. Since that I have been going to the Physio and Acupuncturist every other day to try and get it all back to ‘normal’ – whatever that is. All I know is that I want to go snowboarding again in March (I did also want to go at Christmas, but the Physio said I can forget about that) and I can’t do that sitting down. So that has been my focus lately, getting better, fitter, stronger.

Seems to be going ok as well, I mean, I can walk again at least, although I am not able to lift anything, but hopefully things will just keep on improving. So that has cost me a lot of time, money and effort. Going to one doctor or another every day is exhausting work I tell ya!

On top of that I have had the ongoing saga with my iMac. I am one of the unfortunate ones that received an iMac 27″ with a bad screen, you can follow the thread on Apple here. I mean, the problem is so well-known someone even started a web-page up to document it. Basically there is a design flaw or the manufacturer of the LCD panel has a flaw in production, but either way, after about 3 months the screen looked like someone had rubbed their fingers in soot and randomly touched the right hand side of the screen. Safe to say, no amount of cleaning fixed this. it was in the panel and there was nothing I could do about it. I guess I was a bit lazy, I mean, I couldn’t be bothered hauling my huge iMac into a shop for them to have a look at, but I finally got around to it. So I took it into Cyberport and they looked at it. 4 days later I received a call to let me know that they had found the issue and replaced the LCD panel. I was happy, finally I could sell the damn thing with a clear conscience. I have learnt by now that if you have an Apple machine with issues, the best course of action is to either return it within the first 14 days of purchasing it (there is a no questions asked return policy) and get your money back or order a new one, or if you are later than the first 14 days, use your Applecare to have them replace the parts A.S.A.P and get rid of it. I mean, the huge monitor was partly the reason I bought the damn thing. Anyway, with a little help from my friends I got it back home (remember, I can’t lift anything at the moment) and plugged it in to see a nice clear, white, without dark blotches, screen. That was, until the left side of the panel started flickering and then appeared quite a lot darker than the right side of the panel.

The flickering continued, on and off, but the overall illumination of the panel was so poor that there was no way you could do anything professional on it. So back it went to Cyberport. So now they have it and once again I have no computer to call my own, well, other than the mac mini plugged into the projector. But since the iMac is an all-in-one, I don’t have a spare monitor to plug anything else into – so I just have to wait. Very annoying. So annoying in fact that when I decided I would just get rid of the damn thing, I ordered the new MacBook Pro Retina…….only to now learn that it is also having display problems. FFS.

Funnily enough, as far as I have read, all the display issues seem to go back to Apple using LG panels, the machines equipped with Samsung panels seem to be fine, so here’s hoping I receive my new machine with a Samsung panel and not an LG like is in the iMac.

So you know, when I finally have an operational computer back at home again, I will be able to add some new photo albums, but until that point, I don’t see it happening any time soon.

Anyway, on a side note, I am finally fixing my Technics 1200 MKII turntables that Lufthansa managed to destroy on the way back from Australia to here. Yes, they were in flight cases, flight – doesn’t that mean they should be safe to fly?? I guess not. Not by Lufthansa’s shitty luggage handling standards anyway. Originally I though, man, I really want to fix these because they’re my original decks as well as I thought it would most likely be cheaper than buying new ones. Well, all the new parts combined that I have needed to do the restoration have worked out to be a little more expensive than I had originally bargained on. Albeit, they will look fantastic and go just like new ones, so I guess I can’t complain, but still – damn – why do my ‘little’ projects always manage to seemingly blow out in damage to the bank account!?

That’s pretty much the news for now though, a bit disappointed about the iPhone 5, not to mention iOS6, so I will stick on the iPhone 4s until it has died or been stolen, whatever comes first. Hopefully not the latter because hey, once is enough isn’t it? Anyway, it’s a black one this time around so a little bit more unobtrusive…….

One pretty damn beautiful word

Yes, that’s right, my new iMac is finally on its way to me. I haven’t had my own computer now for around 6 months and I am really looking forward to the screamer that it will be. Little does it know that no sooner will it be delivered than I will be opening it up for surgery to further increase performance – OWC SSD and my 16GB of Crucial RAM here we come 🙂

Where's our speed? Now we just have to wait for damn Deutsche Telekom to give us the VDSL speed we ordered. I mean, I expected that they would royally f@#k things up – which they have so far – but it is getting kinda stupid now.

Deutsche Telekom offered us 50Mbps speed and we were really unhappy with the service we were receiving from 1 & 1 so we canceled 1 & 1 and signed up with Telekom. Well, first they forgot to send the router out which, after calling them they sent it out. Unfortunately it was a piece of rubbish anyway so we returned it and I bought a new Fritz Box 7390 from Saturn. This fixed all the reception problems certain machines were experiencing when connecting via wifi with the Speedport W 723V and proved that the Telekom router really is an inferior product.

Anyway, ever since signing up we have been stuck on 6Mbps and I asked Ina if she could ask them why that is. They created a ticket and then came the response that 50Mbps was not available in our area. Hmmmmm, why did they offer it to us in the first place then? I wonder.

But now all the street around us is being dug up and a big fat beautiful fibre cable is being transplanted into the earth, this can really only mean o0ne thing. The “Weisse Flecken” that Telekom considers we currently live in is being worked on and we might just very soon have the speed we’re after after all.

Summer rain

Yes.
The rain.
And a lot of it.
Today is the first sunny day we have had for at least a week or two I believe.
Ridiculous really.
Was at a friends place the other evening and the weather report showed that at that time it was warmer and sunnier in Sydney (Winter) than currently in Berlin (Summer).

Here’s my Haiku:

Sad Berlin Summer
Gone and missed its time to shine
Always the same; pain

So be wary when you read something like this online (taken from world-guides.com):

“During the summer, between May and August, the city of Berlin can get pleasantly warm with many hours of sunshine and it is very unusual for a day to have no sunshine at all.”

Because this is the second Summer in a row that has seen very little, if any sun. I’d certainly be pretty pissed if I came here for a Summer holiday……

p.s. Received the OWC SSD (the second one they sent out on the 27th, July – the first is most likely now residing in a DHL guys house in his newly constructed computer – f%#ker) and have ordered my new iMac – originally Apple said it would take 4 days to be ready, now they say 2 weeks. Whatever, it’s not like I haven’t been waiting months already right??

Waiting can be a very scary thing….

Or is that a bloody frustrating thing?? I have to wait before I can order my new computer because I need to install the OWC SSD immediately into the thing. I decided against paying Apple the 600 euros they are charging for a 2TB internal hard drive + a 256GB SSD. A number of reasons are behind that decision:

  • I do not require a 256GB SSD as I am only using it for the system software
  • Paying a 500 euro premium for an SSD seems a little exorbitant to me
  • The SSD that Apple ships is inferior to current SSD models

Due to this, I went to OWC and ordered a 120GB OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 6G SSD. I did this on the 21st, June 2011. As you may have read in my previous rants regarding bringing product into the EU from a country outside of the EU, this is a serious pain in the ass. Germany is slower than a f@#$ing wet week when it comes to crap like this. Essentially they are trying to “encourage” you to buy product strictly from within the EU by making things so impossibly difficult, expensive and slow. Well, that’s just flipping great but what happens when said product is not available in the EU? (God – this really is a déjà vu) The only similar product available that I could have purchased locally is the OCZ Vertex 3 Max IOPS SATA III 2.5″ SSD – but I have heard nightmarish stories about them and I really wanted to avoid any difficulties with my new machine. By going with OWC I at least know that they have been tested against Macs and that support is available when in this configuration.

So, what am I doing? I am wondering where the hell my SSD is. How can it possibly take freaking customs so long? I can tell you how – because nothing is done quickly in Germany, I tell you, paint dries faster than most anything that is done in this country. A classic example to a tourist from the States or Australia would be to walk into a Burger King, McDonalds or a similar fast-food establishment and time how long it takes you to get your “fast-food”. I can guarantee you it will not be fast (nor can it really be classified as food – but hey, that’s a whole other story). In fact, the ordering process alone is soooo slow you often have so much time on your hands waiting in the snail-paced queue that you start to question the sanity behind walking into such an establishment in the quest for quick, inexpensive food in the first place. So much time in fact that you might catch yourself walking out, disgusted with yourself, before doing yourself the disservice of placing an order. Fast-Food establishments take note – you are losing out on business in Germany due to how slow your operations run in this country.

Anyway, that’s a break-down of the scenario I currently find myself in. I have been ready to order a computer for the last 4 weeks now and am waiting on a f#$%ing 280US part that is being held hostage in some grimy corner of Berlin customs. They will get to it when they get to it I’m sure, first they need to stamp all the other pieces of paper they have created (as per usual – quite possibly in triplicate) for the other incoming packages that have been lying around for even longer.

The saddest thing is that I have no tracking ID – yes, I was an idiot cheap bastard and thought it wise to forgo this feature of the 32.00US shipping and went with a much saner 8.00US shipping instead. So in all honesty I really have no idea if it is even in the country or if it will ever arrive.

SSD – wherefore art thou? 🙁
